Golden Stars

Crystal clear prisons
Hidden in darkest space
In barren worlds with barren scapes
Silent death ...

"It is none of our concern."

"It's life, it's our concern! Especially for Federation citizens!"

"They aren't Federation. These worlds were never colonized or contacted by the Federation. We were sent to explore, not interfere."

Murky swirlings, quiet ponderings
Ever moving currents
Yet never truly moving
Not quite death ...

"True. To put ourselves into this place's petty squabbles would violate the prime directive."

"So says the one who violated it once before."

"That was from one who asked for our help, these have not done so."

"That's because they can't!"

Flutterings of ghostly cloth
The flickerings of ancient weapons
Weapons useless against the final storm
Yet not quite life ...

"Are we discussing the planet or the life form?"

"The life form of course."

"Then why persist in the plural? We can not save the planet, it is already dead."

"True ... "

"It is truly barren, whether by their own designs or an outside one."

"Which brings us to the second question: if they did not destroy their planet, what did? And is it dangerous to us?"

Clasped in rigid grasps
Metal and speckled stone
Both question and wonder
Silent sleepings ...

"Captain! Please stay on the subject of the life form. At least for now. It is our immediate concern."

"My apologies. Well? Do we or not?"

"Revive it? If we could find a way, I vote yes."

"But that revival would be affecting this planet's destiny! We can't! It violates the prime directive and our first oaths!"

"This planet's destiny is already ended. What's a life?"

"Enough to change the course of time! What if this one can breed on it's own, or is dangerous to us? That would change this place drastically."

"You condemn them to extinction!"

Shimmering blue even in never light
Stones and ridges, like the earthscape gone
Lavender whispings, as waving grass
Never waking ...

"We don't even have a confirmed life sign."

"But the computer is correct on at least one."

"The computer is flickering between a reading of one and two."

"It is correct none the less, the smaller life form's readings are overpowered by it's guardian."

"So that's two lives at stake ... "

Clasped in hands of sapphire stone
Laying as one unseeing
Palest blue yet radiant bright
Yet soon to stir ...

"What are we going to do?"

"Leave them or revive them for their stasis?"

"The prime directive ... this is an interference ... "

"But one of worth. They are in Federation space and if the Federation had sent a team at the beginning they might still be alive. This can be construed as our own fault."

Smoother rock
Yet not stone as guardian still
Greatest Egg! The very last
On Fields far away ...

"But not by forethought purpose. This place was under it's own control and still ... "

"Another place was as well, but that was by attack. Remember the Other One?"

"I remember. The death of an entire race for the death of a world. A cruelty ... but not one as well. A type of justice."

"Were these the ones that might have killed that world?"

"If it were, these two would not be alive."

"True ... "

Gone are friend and foe
The very last of their world
Dragon and Chimera, child and shaman
May finally wake ... to join the earth dance.

"Then what is the decision?"

"Prime directive or not, these two are alive even if their world is dead."

"They are Federation citizens by virtue of their existence in Federation space ... "

"Which makes the prime directive null and void."

"Very well."

"Very well what?"

"I declare by my Star Fleet ranking and all the powers and responsibilities laid upon me that these two are citizens of the Federation and are citizens of the Gamma Space, the plane of golden stars. And as citizens they receive full rights under our laws, both as equal beings and as the representatives of their world."

"You mean -- "

"Wake them up, doctor. It's not polite to leave a planet's rulers out of a discussion about their own world."
