Idol
_____________________________________________________________
Sweeping array of blazing lights, a dizzying view to the stage
below.
Cooling shadows outside the sweltering building, where a single figure
takes shelter. Carefully, a hand raises to light a long, ivory
cigarette with a snap of fingers. Lazy smoke filters into the night,
coiling like a living thing as it encircles the figure's head and then
floats off to the stars. Music seeps from the stone, a steady beat,
like some great heart, throbbing to a drummer's sticks.
Flashing colors of white and red as two forms twirl under hot
lights.
The figure steps from the shadows into the light of a dim street lamp.
A breath of wind blows a discarded poster across the paved road,
straight to the figure's feet. He bends and plucks it from the gutter,
regarding the tacky advertisement for a moment before crumpling it into
a ball and tossing it away. Slowly, he turns to look at the lighted
arena.
Past glittering stilettos to long legs to vanish at the ruffling edge
of ruby and diamond skirts.
Moving through the crowd with barely a thought, hands shoved deep into
the pockets of his black trench, he glances towards the figures on
stage, their features captured by the huge screens behind them. For a
moment he fingers something in his coat, then proceeds.
A dizzying spin and up past the straps of the gowns, to hands clasping
mikes as voices lift in song.
Tilting his lavender haired head to the skylights, he suppresses a
smile, made sinister by the flickering lights. Turning back into the
crowd, he heads for the stairs, still fingering the thing beneath his
coat.
Ruby hair to diamond dress, eyes like fire as she turns to switch with
the one in red.
A shadowy stretch of metal, wreathed in the hot source of the lights, is
all that stands between life and death as he strides out to the space
above the stage. As he withdraws the something a light catches his
face, blue and violet sparks shimmer in return as he shades his eyes and
looks below. A moment's aim and the something hurtles toward the idol
singers below.
Teased hair, dark as midnight, accompaniment to brilliant sapphire
eyes and ruby dress, she clasps her partners hand.
The singers stall, twisting around as the something strikes the ground
between them with a sound of punctured wood. Ruby and sapphire eyes
widen in astonishment and no little fear. Then the wandering lights
wash across the stage, revealing the something. Twin roses,
intertwined, one red, the other white. A glance towards the sky reveals
a shadow moving away, two fingers lifted in parting.
A moment of shock, till hands clasp tight the unlikely gift, eyes
following the shadowy figure out.
