Chapter 7: The One That Got Away

Notes

Almost Doesn't Count is by Brandy.

navy = Kytti remembering what the cats told her.

Why, Reno? Why would you do this to me? I don't understand where I went wrong. We were happy, and you pull something like this. Tell me what I did, Reno? Why can't you do that for me? I at least deserve that much. Please, you have to tell me. But you can't do that, can you? It's not that you can't, it's that you won't. You say it's to protect me... that you don't want me to get hurt. I don't feel protected Reno; not without you. I gave you everything I had, and you do this.

"Thank you, Tseng." I sighed.

"Are you gonna be okay? If you need me, you know I'm here."

"I know, Tseng." I stood up after Tseng.

"Do you want me to find Reno?"

"No, it's okay. I'll handle him." He hesitated and flashed me a look of concern. "Don't worry, Tseng. I'll be fine" With that, Tseng left.

Almost made you love me Almost made you cry Almost made you happy, baby Didn't I didn't I

I wiped the tears from my face and sat back at my desk. "The next time I see you, Reno, we're gonna have a little chat," I said to myself. "Everyone was right: all you do is use. I should be ashamed of myself. I was a fool to think that I could change you. You are and always will be a dog, Reno." I laughed to myself. "You son-of-a-bitch. I am gonna get you, Reno. I am gonna make you pay for what you did to me." You better hope I never see you again, Reno. I will make your life miserable. I will make you fell the pain I felt when you said that phrase to me. If I have to engrave my pain into your head, I will. I never want to see your face again.

Can't keep on, baby Can't keep on tryin'

I didn't see Reno for about a week after our little 'incident'. I wonder; is he hiding from me? Or better yet: is he avoiding me? Reno, it's okay. When I find you, I'll do much worse than just bite you. On the way to my office, I saw Rude in the hallway. "Rude, have you seen Reno?"

"........No."

"Don't lie to me, Rudy."

".........I'm serious....... Haven't seen him in a week."

"Really? Is that so?"

"......Why?"

I smirked, "I think he's avoiding me."

"............."

I flipped my hair. "Play mute if you want to, Rudy. I know you know something. And when I find out, I'm coming after you too."

"........Okay." There was something Rude knew that he wasn't saying. I know he's seen Reno recently. Oh well. When he gathers the guts to come and see me to my face, I'll be ready.

Almost heard you saying You were finally free What was always missing for you, baby You'd found it in me

I walk into my office and find Reno sitting at my desk. "Finally decided to show up, eh?"

"Not happy to see me?" His smart-ass mouth is gonna get him hurt one day.

"Oh I'm happy to see you all right. I've been wanting to ask you something: what was I to you?"

"......."

"Was I just another 'good fuck'? Is that it, Reno? Cause if it is you could've gone on a street corner and found that. Or was it because it was free?"

"I'm not here to listen to your accusations."

"Well, you haven't really given me anything else to go on, now have you?"

"I came here to tell you something."

"Hurry up, Reno. I haven't finished biting your neck off."

"Come here."

"I'm not coming any where near you, Reno."

He grinned. "I know you know the reason why I broke up with you."

"No, I don't. Are you finally deciding to shed some light on our little predicament?"

Gonna find me somebody Not afraid to let go Want a no doubt be there kind of man You came real close

"Charcoal told me that he told you."

"He didn't tell me anything." He smirked. I hate his smirk right about now.

"Well, did he tell you anything before we went on our date?" I hate the way he stressed the word 'date'. Crap, now he expects me to think back a year ago. Crap. Well, let's see. Before we went on our date I asked Charcoal what he thought about Reno.

I sense a deep feeling for you in him. He may not have shown it, but he has been in the same presence of mind about you as you about him. Only one who fails to see the truth the first time can accept it the second.

"All he said was that he sensed a deep feeling for me in you, and that you were in the same presence of mind about me as I about you. Then he got all 'logical' on me."

But every time you built me up You only let me down And everybody knows Almost doesn't count

Only one who fails to see the truth the first time can accept it the second.

"He said something about failing to see the truth the first time and accepting it the second."

"Did he say what he meant?"

I mean, that when the time comes, something bad will happen. You must let it pass in order to see the truth behind the lie.

"He said that something bad would happen and that I...... should..... Oh my." This was it. This was what he wouldn't tell me because I would've avoided it. He was right; if I knew, I would've avoided this. "That still doesn't answer my question."

"About why I broke up with you?"

"Yes."

"You should look at your clues a little bit less perceptively."

"God not you too. I don't speak 'logical'."

"You have all the pieces to the puzzle, Kat; all you need to do is put them together. It's like looking at one of Picasso's paintings: most people don't get them because they look too hard."

Maybe you'll be sorry Maybe you'll be cold Maybe you'll come runnin' back, baby >From the cruel, cruel world

"I thought I told you that I didn't speak 'logic'."

"You're looking too hard at the puzzle pieces, Kat." He slid up behind me and grabbed me around the waist. Crap, there he goes again: him and his damn seductive ways. "Stop looking so hard at the picture, Kat," he whispered in my ear. Damn: I'm supposed to be raging mad at him and here I am about to fall asleep from his sweet whispers. I can't think.

"Um, what does that have to do with anything?"

"Figure it out: who's the only person I'd risk our relationship for in order to protect you?"

I think I feel his hands moving lower, but that's not the point. "Shin-Ra..."

"Exactly."

I should've known. And all of those bad things I said about Reno. "Oh no: you're still not off the hook, mister!"

So maybe I'll be here Maybe I'll see ya 'round That's the way it goes Almost doesn't count

I twist out of Reno's grip and look him dead in the face. "Why didn't you just say so? Why did you hurt me like that?"

"I'm sorry Kat. I didn't mean to do it. It hurt me too."

"I saw you crying."

He blushed. "You did?"

"You're cute when you blush," I say as I move toward him.

He backs up a bit. "Um, shouldn't we be trying to find a way to stop Shin-Ra?"

"After," I say, pushing him up against the wall.

"You don't want to have sex with me. I mean, you were just mad at me. I would make me wait."

"You're right Reno, I don't want to have sex with you," I say taking off his shirt and jacket. "I want you to make love to me."

"Well, um, I don't deserve to make love to you," he says as I take off my tie and jacket.

"Yes you do, Reno," I purr as I start kissing his neck.

"Well, uh, I doubt that.....I deser.....oh crap." I'm sucking on his neck, determined to give him a hickey for the one he gave me on my neck from sucking that chocolate off.

"What's wrong, Reno? You're stuttering," I whisper.

"Um..... ah..... nothing's wrong." He moved from his spot against the wall to the middle of the room. "No. Not in the office."

"Why not?"

"Um... because."

"'Because' what?" I ask as I start undoing my bra.

"NO!" He yells as he stops me from completing my task by grabbing my hands. "You are not finishing that."

"Why not?" I asked as I licked along his collarbone.

He sighed. "You know what, I'm gonna go."

He went for the door, but I grabbed his wrist and twirled him around, pressing his back against it. "I'm not done with you, Reno."

"Yes you are," he says as he manages to push me back and escape.

"Damn. He escaped." Oh, but I'm gonna get you, Reno. But first, I'm off to see the President.
