Prologue: The Last Taboo

"He did what?!?" Was a common reply from the three dozen or so people sitting in the dark council room. Everyone was in a state of shock.

Well, almost everyone. There was a group, off to the side of the others, who seemed unaffected, as if they had been expecting to hear this. They hadn't, of course. Underneath the wide variety of masks, they were all trying to recover from the statement that was just made by one of their closest allies. Although different, they each respected the person who made the claim, and while the rest of the people were doubting his sanity, they were thinking of how to fix the problem he had informed them of.

"We'll need to send someone after him, of course," said one of them, smile never wavering.

Another nodded, her bright eyes confident and dangerous. "No problem! I can handle this one easily!"

The one to her right sighed. "That won't work, if you follow him, and meet yourself...."

The woman stopped, her eyes widening slightly. "Oh, yeah....I guess that won't work. We need someone who won't run that risk, but who is good enough to keep all classified information to herself...."

A figure that was sitting on the ground in the shadows near the group looked up from between locks of hair, staring back at the group. "You've got to be kidding me," she muttered as she continued to match each gaze coldly.

The eyes slowly moved away, not able to hold her own for that long without a slight shiver running up their spines. No matter how older or more powerful than her they were, they could never forget who, and what, she was. Finally, only two pairs of eyes rested on hers. They were uncannily alike, and as the two girls stared at each other, the first sighed and stood up.

"Fine, I'll do it...But on my terms." She smirked slightly. "And boy, will you guys ever owe me..." A shiver ran up their collective spines as they walked over to the middle of the room, to tell the Council their plans.
