Part 1

Notes

Warnings: As many as you can put on this one short of death of a canon character. Nonconsensual, lemon, BDSM... things of that nature. Definitely not for the squeamish or easily squicked, I'm afraid. You've been warned.

Author's Notes: I can make no apologies for this fic, no would I want to. In exploring the many layers within me, I found this amidst them and have simply gone with the flow of it. Safer to write about things of this sort anyway.

interlude 1

He screamed, his insides being ripped to shreds as the shaft pummeled him. Zel clawed frantically at the ground, struggling to get away. No good; he was completely at the mercy of the Mazoku above him. The demon all but purred as he continued to rip the poor chimera apart from the inside out. Tears streaked down the broken angel's face, the dirt of the road clinging to the salty, damp ribbons as they harden and glitter in the full moon. A beautiful testament of the wretched and tragic scene being played out. The monster only laughed, knowing full well what precious virtue he stole that night. It only fueled his sadistic nature as he thrust deeper into the screaming young man. Blood pooled on the ground, cries of agony and shame echo out into the cool winds that carried the sad notes away to silent ears. Soon, even that was too much for Zelgadis to do, the brutal invasion sapping all his strength. The Mazoku grunted, his hand reaching down to wrap tightly around Zel's genitals until he couldn't help but scream in abject pain. Still it did not stop. Zel felt his mind trying desperately to save his sense of self and shut down, but each time he was yanked back to this living nightmare as the Mazoku simply inflicted just enough added pain to keep the shaman's mind from shutting down completely. Being a Greater Mazoku, he didn't need to rely on things like sleep and rest. The torment suffered by his victim sustained him for as long as he desired.

At one point the sheer pain of the attack stopped. Zelgadis lay in the dirt, unable to move, to talk, to think... Silent, silver tears fell over his cheeks, the gemstones reflecting the lunar light as if to illuminate the horror of his experience. What little reasoning he had left only wished to crawl away and die in peace.

Yet still, it was not over.

With the chimera no longer struggling, the Mazoku was free to turn his attentions to a more perverted nature. He sweeps the broken-spirit into his arms, phasing him to a private domain where none save another Greater Mazoku would think to find him. It is there that Zel learns true shame. Unspeakable acts of molestation, abuse, and crimes are time and again visited upon his body. But the worse is the hated pleasure the Mazoku manages to bring out, watching in bemusement as Zel coats his lower stomach with his own seed. When Zel suffers this unwanted release at the hands of a beast the Mazoku finds in the woods, he finally breaks in both body and soul. It doesn't matter what happens now. He knows he will never be the same again...

present

Having been kidnapped by Hellmaster Phibrizzo once, Gourry was surprisingly calm when he was whisked away by Xelloss. Of course, Lina was less than docile about it. Gourry flinched as one of her fireballs nearly caught him.

"Man, there goes a good pair of boots. I hope this is important, Xelloss. Lina's going to Dragu Slave you to next week when we come back."

"It's very important, and only you and I can ever know about it."

"Alright, so what is it?"

"Zel's been kidnapped...."

Gourry was slow about many things, but the life of his friends wasn't ever one of them. "Who, do you know? And what do they want with Zel? And what is it about them that you didn't want Lina to know?"

He's not as dumb as one would think... "I'll tell you everything I know when we get to WolfPack Island. I may need to speak with my lady about this."

Gourry made a face, but decided to keep his silence. Instead, he closed his eyes, his mind bringing up a picture of his friend to help him cope with his fear of flying and heights.

Zel... what's happened to you? Is a cure worth so much?

It's after nightfall when they finally touched down on solid ground. Once safe, or as close to it on that particular island, a thought popped up in Gourry's head. "Hey, why didn't you just, yunno, pop us here like you usually do?"

No, not dumb at all... "Something is interfering with traveling through the dimensional space. Had I just 'popped' us here, we'd have came out looking like a bad and messy jigsaw puzzle. While not a problem for me..." Xelloss cracked an eye open to give Gourry a meaningful look.

"Oh, I see your point." Gourry suppressed a shudder at the picture that brings to mind. "Okay, so now what?"

"Hmm, my lady hasn't returned yet, so we'll have to wait. I suppose I can tell you what I know until she comes back."

"Is... is it that bad?"

"Worse." Xelloss began walking towards his personal domain, mindful of Gourry keeping up behind him.

"So, what happened? Who has Zel...?"

"An old, ex-associate..."

"Another Mazoku?" Unconsciously, Gourry's hand floated to the hilt of his sword, already planning on how to use it against whoever was stupid enough to take someone he called friend.

"Yes, though even for a Mazoku, I can't abide the things he does. A Mazoku's nature is that of a trickster, or for the less subtle ones, simply to feed from the negative energies from mortals. Manipulation, deceit, double-crossing... standard Mazoku code of ethics. But never is it our will to just break someone's spirit. Kill them, no problem. Break them... it's frowned upon."

"Get to the point already."

Xelloss sighed. "It's not that easy." He walks to a door that stands out, not connected to or leading anywhere. Just a door and frame in the middle of the wilderness. Xelloss pulled a key from his waistband and slips it inside the door, where inside Gourry sees what is obviously a room set in "pocket space."

"I thought you said..."

"I said traveling. This is already here, and the doorway gives it a physical anchor. You don't have to worry about this one." he stepped inside, gesturing for Gourry to follow. He does so, though he keeps an eye on the door just in case.

Then he looked around.

Strange, jagged swirls of reds and violets create the surreal backdrop. Stars seem to provide a soft illumination, though Gourry can't quite be sure. The colors blend harmoniously into one another, creating the effect of a sunset meeting the Northern Lights. There is no visible wall, ceiling, or floor that the swordsman can detect; an endless expanse of violet, red, and blue hues that stretch on forever. It would have been a vision of celestial beauty, but the four poster bed with black satin sheets broke it up. Next to it sat a nightstand, and across a simple dresser. A bedroom in space. Gourry shook his head.

What did I expect? This is Xelloss... [1]

Xelloss pulled out a couple of chairs from nowhere, offering one to Gourry. "We have some time..."

"Do we? If Zel's being held prisoner..."

"If we go in blind, you'll be killed... if you're lucky." Xelloss tone sent a very unpleasant chill down Gourry's back. It was then that he noticed what was nagging the back of his mind since Xelloss carted him off.

The trickster wasn't smiling.

That unpleasant feeling grew, and Gourry had to physically force himself not to draw the Sword of Light. "Okay... okay... so what do you have to tell me?"

Xelloss took the seat opposite Gourry, resting his chin on his knuckles as he lost himself to thought. "Mind you, I had no idea this is what became of Zelgadis. If I had learned of it sooner, I might have been able to free him on my own. As it stands now, I have to be careful with how I proceed..."

"What do you mean?"

"Let me start at the beginning..."

four weeks ago

Xelloss watched the antics of Lina-tachi with a somewhat empty heart. While he enjoyed the fights and bickering, there was something missing from it. Something he had yet to put his finger on...

Maybe if I show myself, I'll figure it out.

So in typical Xelloss fashion, he appeared right behind Lina, earning him a fireball in the kisser.

Nice, but... not the same...

"What the hell do you want now, Xelloss?"

"Why nothing. I have a bit of free time and thought I'd just enjoy your company."

Lina narrowed her eyes. "Is that so?"

"Really, what could I possibly want this time anyway? No worlds to save, no demons to stop from resurrecting. No insane mages trying to take over the world. No Dark Masters trying to destroy it. No Lord of..."

"Okay, okay, just shut up already..." Lina turned and stomped back to where Gourry and Amelia were still trying to figure out where they were. "Don't suppose you know how to get to Runique, do you, Xelloss?"

"Hmm... Runique..." He looked thoughtful for a moment. "Well, if you pop into dark space and take a left at..."

"Grr, how about on foot??"

"Oh, the old fashion way." Xelloss thought a bit more. He stood there thinking for so long it was all Lina could do not to yell at him. Of course, she couldn't do much and yelled anyway.

"Well, do you know where it is or not?!"

"Hmm..." Finally the trickster priest brightens. "Nope!"

"Why you... FIREBA..."

"Hey, Lina." Gourry looked up, distracting the irate sorceress, much to Xelloss' dismay. "According to this map, we're not too far from some place called Ewscrayit [2]. Maybe we can just go there and look for an inn."

"Hmm... maybe. Hey, didn't Zel say he was going there?"

At the mention of Zelgadis, Xelloss turned his face upward, opening his eyes halfway.

That's it. I haven't been pounded on by Zel lately. Still looking for that cure of his. Maybe I should... but he's so darling this way. Besides, one man's cure is another man's poison...

Hearing the chimera's name again, Xelloss gave half an ear to the conversation going on.

"Remember, Miss Lina, he said he'd go there first, and if he couldn't find anything, he'd travel to Runique, then Beilar, then through the Tupuxy Forest over to Rimolde."

If he looked back, Xelloss might give some thought to the notion of Fates picking one moment of time to work their magic. No sooner had the memory of Tupuxy Forest blazed hot in his mind than the voice of his lady echoed within.

"Xelloss, return. I have a task for you."

I do not believe in luck, yet neither do I believe in coincidence. Xelloss made a quick bow, catching the other's attention. "It appears my little respite is over. Duty calls. Perhaps we'll meet up again. And do tell Zel-kun not to be a stranger." For some unfathomable reason, Xelloss aimed the last comment solely at Gourry before he turned and ducked behind a tree.

"Hey, waitaminute...!" Lina followed him, but as usual, there was no trace. "Damnit it, one of these days I'm going to get that guy."

Lina hadn't finished her sentence before Xelloss was in his lady's realm, phasing into the smoky room without disturbing the low cloud formed from Xelas' habit.

"My lady."

"Xelloss. It appears Dolphin is at it again. Another of her little parties."

"Ah. Shall I attend?"

"Normally, I wouldn't waste the effort, but there's rumors of one of her underlings, Makouri, having found a little trinket of sorts. Do be a dear and see what exactly it is."

"Of course. Anything else? Message to Dolphin?"

"Hmm, oh, yes. Something that may interest you. It appears Seirin has something he refers to as an 'ishibara' [3]. Why not look in on him while you're there. Might be amusing."

Seirin? "Of course, my lady. When should I leave?"

"Might as well get it over with, don't you think?"

"Indeed. Should I give Dolphin your regrets?"

"I'd rather you give her a poisoned clam, but we don't want another argument, do we?"

"Of course not." Xelloss remembered Dolphin the last time Xelas tried to kill her on a whim. "Did you ever dry out your lair?"

"I just tossed it. You see one lair..." Xelas takes a drag, crossing her legs and showing more than a goodly amount of thigh. "Just tell her duties. Even she should understand that."

"One can never quite tell with Dolphin... I'll give her the message." Xelloss phases out, leaving Xelas to her cigarette and thoughts.

What will you do, Xelloss? How much is a stone rose worth to you? The players are set, now I must watch...

Xelloss stood near the back of the hall, idly wondering how many sea creatures had given up their lives for the decor.

Someone should tell her that tentacles are passe.

He watched as the various guest all showed off this thing or that they found in the human world; some bit of oddity to impress the other Mazoku as well as Deep Sea Dolphin. Indeed, the dark general seemed to be fawning over each knickknack displayed. Xelloss was hard put not to yawn. He glanced over at the food table, noting with grim amusement that much of it was still alive. He grabbed a small turtle, breaking the neck before popping it in his mouth, the shell crunching loudly.

What I wouldn't give for one of Lina's fireballs right now. Or perhaps an Elmekia Lance from Zel...

At the thought of the chimera, Xelloss got a strange, prickly sensation on the back of his neck. He wasn't sure why, but then blamed it on the newest guest to enter the room.

"Makouri, I was wondering if I'd see you..."

"Kaiou-sama, but for thy beauty alone I would attend."

And Zel thinks I'm full of it. Xelloss looked on, his smile never betraying his disgust as the Mazoku make kissy faces with the dark general. The demon looks quite resplendent in a pair of dark pants with a billowing ice-blue shirt and cloak. Both his eyes and short, thick hair are the same pale blue; while Dolphin's hair reminds one of the ocean, Makouri would give one a sense of an ice age gone by. Though he smiles warmly enough, everything about the Mazoku radiates cold.

Zel should see this one. If I'm full of it, then Makouri must make it.

"But don't tell me you came empty handed, Makouri..."

"Not when I have come upon a trinket sure to delight even your soul weary eyes, milady." Makouri reaches into the folds of his cloak, pulling out a small box of the deepest black. The light seems drawn to it, as if swallowed by the dark container. Kaiou's eyes light up as she sees it.

"Oh, Mako-chan, what is it?? Showmeshowmeshowme!"

By the mother, she sounds like a child...

The ice demon smiled, carefully opening the box. Barely was it cracked open when Xelloss felt an enormous amount of sheer energy, almost chaotic in nature, yet with a strange sense of purpose.

L-sama...

"My fairest Kaiou-sama, may I present you with the Nyx Tear..." Makouri opened the box fully, revealing a gem of the darkest color. It shone brightly in it's holder, yet it held no lustre of it's own; the light from around it was drawn into the gem, thereby causing it to glow from within. Only the strongest control kept Xelloss from gaping at the sight of the shaded jewel.

How in the seven hells did Makouri get that?!?

"Oh, Mako-chan...!" Dolphin reached for the gem, pausing to look at Makouri for permission.

She's a dark lord, and she's asking permission... she doesn't even know what it is... No wonder Juuou-sama wanted me to come. The Nyx Tear, by all that's dark, how did he get it?

"I would never deny you, Kaiou-sama. By all means..."

He doesn't know either, or else he wouldn't still be catering to her... unless it's just a personal thing.

Dolphin giggled happily as she took the gem and held it up to the light. Now none of the Mazoku present could deny feeling the great surge of power the gem brought, though none were foolish enough to try and take it from either Dolphin or Makouri.

Makouri... I could, but I couldn't handle Dolphin alone. Must keep peace, but I know already what Juuou-sama wants.

"Oh, Mako-chan, it's so pretty! But what is it??"

Unable to resist, Xelloss turned his back to the party, and smacked his forehead. One has to wonder how our Lord Shabranigdo went about picking his generals.

"The Nyx Tear is rumored to be a tear of our Mother L-sama herself. I did some research into it, and there's a vague and very unclear account of her actually having cried one lone tear at the fight between our Lord and the dragon Ceiphied. Of course, since she created them both just for that purpose, I can't tell you how accurate that rumor may be."

Only because you can't understand the mind of a mother, even one as powerful as L-sama.

"Ooh! That explains the tingly feeling I have then!" She turns it over a couple of times before placing it back in the box. "It's so beautiful, Mako-chan..."

"Not nearly half as that of your own breathtaking sight, Kaiou-sama. But tell me, do you truly like the trinket?"

"Oh yes! It's gorgeous!"

"Perhaps enough for a dowry?"

"I certainly don't see..." Even in her somewhat unstable mind, Dolphin was able to pick up the true meaning of Makouri's question. "Oh, Mako-chan... really?"

He's using a tear from L-sama as an engagement gift to Dolphin. And here I thought Kaiou was insane. So now I have to figure out a way to get the tear from those two. This could get complicated.

"M-Mako-chan... you mean it?"

"Fair lady, I have been searching for something to capture your eye so that I might be given the chance to capture your heart."

Dolphin squeals as she throws herself in Makouri's arms, earning a pained smile from Xelloss. Fortunately, the two were too deeply involved with each other to notice much else.

Zel, where are you with a Ra Tilt when I need you?

Again, Xelloss go a strange, prickly sensation down his spine. Through no fault of his own, the trickster's eyes are drawn to a small crowd gathering near the back. Both Dolphin and Makouri notice it as well and begin drifting over there.

"What have we here?"

One of the lesser Mazoku looks up at dolphin, her face strangely flushed. "Kaiou-sama, Seirin has the most fascinating pet..."

With each step, something kept nagging at Xelloss. Something very wrong, something out of place. He wanted to say it was the Nyx Tear, or maybe that turtle he ate. Anything but what he senses were screaming at him since the crowd had formed. He walked up, making his way to the front of the crowd.

The smile dropped.

Seirin, a lesser Mazoku of enchanting beauty, had a nasty reputation of making mindless toys of his unfortunate victims. But this time he had gone beyond his usual modus operandi...

...but then, he had a unique toy with him on this occasion.

...

Dolphin broke through Xelloss' growing darkness, her shrill voice beaming at the cause of it.

"Oh, Seirin, it's adorable! Wherever did you find it?"

Seirin opened pearl, slit-pupil eyes to Dolphin. His hair, also the same pearl white, was tied in the back and trailing to the floor. His clothing was simple and would have looked plain on anyone else, but nothing was ever so on this creature. The demon was sitting in a chair, his hand cupped around the chin of his latest acquisition which was dress in a collar, heavy anklets and bracelets on its limbs, and a silk, skimpy loincloth.

"Kaiou-sama. Come to see my little Ishibara?"

...

"How cute! Oh, I want to see it!"

Seirin smiled, patting his lap. Again Xelloss fought to remain as neutral as ever as the slender, smoothed skin form hopped up obediently. Seirin ruffled its hair almost tenderly as Dolphin began to fawn and pet the trembling figure.

"Absolutely adorable!"

"And well trained. But I expect nothing less from this one. Truly my finest one yet."

"Such smooth skin..."

"Ah, yes. It was a bit difficult for him but it was worth it, don't you think, Kaiou-sama?"

Xelloss took the chance to look for a familiar mark on the pet's arms or legs... anywhere. All he say was smooth, unbroken skin, and a slight flinch if the poor creature was touched where those marks should have been.

Filed them away, no doubt.

The rest of the conversation flew by him, which was unusual for the Trickster priest. Finally, Dolphin announced something about going to feed. All the Mazoku left their toys and trinkets behind, knowing none would be able to get to them anyway. Xelloss waited until they were all gone. He walked over to where Seirin's pet stood, gently running a finger down it's face. If he could allow himself to feel it, he was sure his heart was breaking at the soft, scared sound of hopelessness he heard.

What did he do to you, Zelgadis...?

Unfortunately, Xelloss was unable to do anything for the enslaved Zelgadis. One problem came in the form of Dolphin herself, who came back with the other to gush over the "pretty pet" for nearly twenty minutes straight.

A second problem was in the Nyx Tear.

I can't go up against that alone. And my task is to retrieve it. I doubt Juuou-sama would be happy if I brought a chimera home instead...

He dared a glance over at Seirin and his 'pet'. Xelloss' fingers tightened on his staff as he watched Seirin command Zel to lick Dolphin's ankles. The dark general giggled, only seeing Zel as a new puppy or something similar. Seirin's hand stroked lovingly down Zel's back, slipping under the loincloth to fondle the trembling young man obscenely. His movement was well hidden, but Xelloss noticed it clearly, as well as the strained look of shame and pleasure on Zel's face. Inwardly, Xelloss cringed, his imagination already conjuring up the type of torture Zel would have received to make him so submissive.

By the time I can find a way to get him out, he'll be so far gone... will anything reach him?

"Seirin, what else can he do?"

"He's a creature of pleasure, first and foremost. Would you like me to show you?"

"Oh yes, please? He's so pretty, Seirin."

Time was a great teacher of many things. It could teach one skill, patience, maturity...

...or in Xelloss case, not to let anyone know just how much he wanted someone's beating heart between his teeth.

His eyes were closed, his smile impassive. Xelloss gave no more emotional response than a stone as Seirin proceeded to lift the loincloth and showing, much to Zel's growing shame/pleasure, his constant state of wanting.

"It took awhile, but now he is able to please anyone at a mere snap of the fingers." Seirin lowers the cloth, noting the sudden blush rising to Dolphin's face. "Would you like to try, Kaiou-sama?"

"Me? Oh, I... well, not now, at least... what else can he do?"

"Anything I desire, if I may be so bold."

"So... he could... right here... anyone?" The color made a pretty strip across Dolphin's nose and cheeks.

"If you wish... hmm... you there, would you be so kind?" Seirin moved out of his chair, letting a pretty, androgynous looking young Mazoku take his place. The demon looked even more flushed than Dolphin. He glanced up at Seirin, his voice squeaking with excitement.

"Anything I want?"

"In the physical sense, yes..."

The demon licked his lips, then whispers his request to Seirin. Chuckling, he gave Zel the barest of looks, his orders clear in his eyes. The broken chimera returned the look, knowing there will be no rescission of the order. He crawled on all fours, settling between the Mazoku's legs. With ease of training, Zel kept his hands on the ground and used only his mouth to slip the demon's pants down, then quickly swallows his length down the hilt. His eyes close, he concentrates solely on bring the Mazoku to his release. The sounds of the rest of the attending guests ring hot and hurtful in his ears, cheering Zel on or complimenting Seirin at how well trained he is. Dolphin couldn't resist leaning closer to run her fingers through the thick, lavender bangs over his eye.

"Oh, Seirin... Are there any more like him?"

"Unfortunately, no. He is the only one of such beauty and grace."

Dolphin pouted, watching as the Mazoku finally spills his release over Zel's well taught tongue. He stayed on all fours, his head handing down as his body shivers from the shameful spectacle he is.

"Aw..." She beamed, an idea coming to her unstable brain. "Well, if I can't have one for myself, I'll just have to let you stay with me so I can keep him around, right?"

Again, Xelloss was force to slam his rigid control up to keep from jabbing his staff right through Seirin's neck. The look on his face rankled Xelloss' nerves more than he cared to admit.

"If you command it, it will be done, lady Kaiou-sama."

"Done!" Dolphin clapped her hands, then knelt down to hold Zel's face in her hands. A strange light shone in her eyes, one not related to her madness.

"You'll be happy here, Ishibara, I just know it..."

Xelloss could only watch as Zel mewed softly, resting his face against Dolphin's neck like a tired cat.

interlude 2

Panting, sobbing, Zel fought against the release as he'd been trained to do. He didn't, couldn't come. To do so would lead to more pain. More punishment. He didn't want to be punished anymore...

"Very good, little one. Come for me now."

A strangled cry of shameful pleasure escaped his lips. Only the fear of displeasing his master kept Zel from collapsing right then and there. He'd forgotten how long he'd been in a perpetual state of wanting. In truth, he'd forgotten almost everything of his former life. If anyone where to ask him what he was now, he'd only say he was his master's desire, to be toyed with as his master saw fit. Gone was the once proud, independent shaman who fought time and again with Lina and the others. Only a shell and shadow remained. A beautiful body housing an all but dead soul. If his master knew how empty the blue angel was inside, he showed no signs of caring.

"Come my pet. Time for rounds..."

A cold shiver ran down the chimera's spine. He hated rounds almost as much as he hated punishment. But his master was both creative and sadistic, and could find ways of hurting Zel that would still leaving him screaming into the night. Choking down a whimper, he crawled on hands and knees, guiding by the rod that his master used to push him wherever he wished Zel to crawl.

Maybe if he was good, his master would let him rest a bit...

present

Gourry sat staring at nothing. The blood drained from his face a long time ago. Blue eyes looked over at the messenger. He heard it. Xelloss had proof, yet he still couldn't make his mind grasp the concept...

"A slave...?"

"Yes. He showed Zel off during Dolph's 'gathering'. Silly things to show off what they find in the mortal world. My lady sends me to them to make sure nothing of true value or power is ever found. I couldn't do anything for him, though. But you can."

"Wh-why Zel?"

"Why indeed? He is a rarity. Do you know he is the only chimera made from a human? Most others are just pieces magically stuck together. He was altered, changed into separate yet connected parts. Unlike other chimeras that are no better than dumb muscle, he has a high intellect and is capable of using magic. Not to mention, he is a sight unto himself. Surely you've noticed, despite what he may think of himself."

That much was certainly true. Gourry had lost count of how many times he stole a sidelong glance when he thought Zel wouldn't notice. Each and every time he did, he wondered how anybody could think that enchanting face was ugly. Everything about Zel spoke of a quiet grace, even in his most embarrassing moments. Not to mention the occasions where he watched the shaman drinking his coffee, wondering how those lips would taste against his own...

"Gourry... Gou-ree! Yoohoo!"

Gourry snapped out of his daydream with a start, hoping against hope Xelloss wouldn't say anything about it or the heat he could feel burning on his face. "Yeah?"

"Good, you're back." Xelloss tilted his face up, leaving Gourry to ponder what exactly the trickster meant. "As I was saying, with Seirin staying with Dolphin, and Makouri holding the Nyx Tear, I'm limited in what I can do. The wrong move could quite possible bring about a Mazoku war. The results to both Humans and Mazoku would... not be pretty."

"Okay, I guess I can understand that, but how do I fit in? I mean, I want to help Zelgadis, but I don't know if I can take on a general or whatever you call her..."

"I thought of that. You wouldn't last a second if Dolphin were angered. And the Nyx Tear makes Makouri as powerful as she, if not more so. And attacking Seirin, no matter how richly deserving, would only make things worse..."

"So what do we do?"

"She's going to throw another of her soirées in a few days. Of course, I get the unrequisite joy of going." Not even Gourry could mistake Xelloss' tone for anything other than the sarcasm intended. "However, I'm not one to usually bring a trinket. That will change this time..."

"What do you... oh. I guess that would be me."

One has to wonder why you play dumber than you really are, Gou-kun. "That would be about right."

"Okay, so you drag me with you... as what?"

"What else? A knight in shining armor..."

interlude 3

He always knew he could bleed, but he didn't know he could bleed so much and still be alive.

Zelgadis lay on his small bed, watching the sheets turn red from the blood slowing seeping from his skin. He knew he was in pain, and it played on the edges of his consciousness, but he was too tired to actually feel it. The chimera closed his eyes, not wanting to see the awful reminders any more. It didn't help; in his memories he could clearly hear the voice of this tormentor as the small stones that dotted his skin were being filed off his body.

"Come now, you always wanted to be rid of them, did you not, Ishibara?"

Zel thought even his face would not be spared the agony of his 'beautification', but apparently his tormentor found those stones pretty and left them on.

He was snapped from his reverie when hands began cleaning and stroking the chimera. His ankles and wrists were secured to the bed, leaving his spread-eagle and vulnerable. Zel only closed his eyes tighter, not wanting to know who or what would he suffer from this time.

Then he was ripped apart from the inside, speared on what he could only describe as a shaft of unadulterated pain.

"Time for lessons, Ishibara."

He couldn't scream; he didn't have the energy, and his voice was still hoarse from the last time. Empty blue eyes finally opened to see what Zel would be put through this time.

"Ah, good, you're awake. Don't worry, I'm not going to do much, just make sure you know you're place now. You are to serve me, and anybody I deem fit to send you to. I thought tonight would be a good night for you to learn that anybody can become your master if I so desire them to. You won't have to move much, if at all..." Zelgadis felt the shaft pushed in deep enough to press hard against his prostrate, bringing an unwanted arousal through the pain. "This is to make sure you're ready when they come. Do well, Ishibara, and perhaps I'll let you rest.."

With that, his tormentor was gone. Zel didn't notice the tears anymore, they were routine now, and were even slowing down. He turned his head to the door, waiting for the first of his temporary masters to come and inflict their desires on him...

present

Gourry had a mantra repeating in his head. He never really believed things like that and meditation worked for someone like him; one reason he didn't use magic after all. But he had a mantra now, and he watched it swirl inside his mind to keep a stranglehold on reality.

I'm doing this for Zelgadis. I'm doing this for Zelgadis. I'm doing this for Zelgadis...

It wouldn't have been so bad, he reasoned, had he been allowed to keep his normal clothes. But Xelloss said it wouldn't be wise as one: he might be recognized as one of Lina's friends, and two: he needed to look "interesting." So now he was walking behind Xelloss, dressed in full body armor. The Sword of Light was disguised as a normal blade, again Xelloss' idea.

"Do you know how many Mazoku would kill you three and twenty times over to get that? Even if you get most of them, there's some higher level Mazoku that would give you a hard fight. Besides, we want camouflage first, fighting later."

"Fine, but it doesn't mean I have to like it," Gourry mumbled to himself.

"What was that, Gou-kun?"

"Nuthin'."

"Now remember, Gourry, you're a true knight, save the damsel, kill the evil dragons, demons, whatever. More importantly, you do anything I tell you. Got it?"

"Got it. Um, just what exactly will I have to do?"

"Knowing Dolphin? Probably have to fight one or two of the lower Mazoku. Probably on her behalf. She's something of a romantic."

At this Gourry simply snorted, keeping his opinions of the dark general to himself. "Okay, we get in there, then what?

"Then, while everyone is out and all the trinkets are in the room, you are to grab The Nyx Tear and Zelgadis. If you must choose, grab the tear first."

"But..."

"Think about it, Dolphin is bad enough. The tear gives Makouri a definite advantage as well. If we get the tear, we can at least regroup and try again for Zel-kun."

"But we'd lose our cover, wouldn't we?"

"Then we just bring in the big guns and give the tear to Lina, albeit temporarily."

"Ah..." Gourry was glad for the face guard, as he didn't want Xelloss to see his expression at that idea. No way Zel would ever want anyone else to see him like that. I have to get them both, it's the only way...

"Here we are..."

Gourry stopped, trying to see where "here" was.

"Xelloss, all I see if a big mountain..."

"Of course you do. Have to be Mazoku to see it." Xelloss walked over to an area where the rock face was unusually smooth, and laid a hand on it. The wall shimmered, revealing a spacial pocket similar to the doorway into Xelloss' room.

"Is... is that..." Gourry swallows. "...safe?"

"Quite. While the Nyx Tear is affecting dark travel from one place to another, stationary places are still stable. Dolphin has several inland entrances to her realm in the Demon Sea. Now come on, don't want to be late after all." Xelloss steps through the entrance, his form disappearing in the swirl of sporadic, spacial energy. Gourry hangs back, wondering if there's another way to go about this.

"Maybe we could just fly there..."

A hand reaches back out, snags Gourry by the shoulder, and just yanks him in, ending all further discussion on the matter.

interlude 4

So so so tired...

Zel forgotten how many times he'd been brought to the oblivion of his release. With each one, the pain and exhaustion grew a little more. Screams of unwanton lust soon became cries of agony as his body is forced time and again over the edge. His heart threatens to explode inside his chest. Dark spots dance in front of his eyes, threatening his vision to darkness, and him with it. Each tortured breath brought with it a searing heat to his chest. The dim light shone off the sweat soaked skin as every muscle trembled with his repeated his exertions.

How much more could he take?

As if to answer him, Zelgadis felt the painfully familiar press of fingers to his abused passage. Tears spill unbidden over his cheeks as the invading digits once again spread the oil deep inside, brushing along his tender spot before pulling away.

"Come now, Ishibara, you're doing so well. Just one more time..."

He doesn't know why, he certainly couldn't explain it in his current state. Yet there was something about those words... Perhaps because it was the first praise he'd received since falling into the hands of his master.

"You want to please me, don't you, Ishibara?"

Please...? Yes... yes, he did. He wanted to please, to make his master happy. Then, he could rest, if only for a little while...

Somehow, Zelgadis managed to force himself to all fours once again. He nearly collapsed when the thick cocked spiked him deep and fast, but an arm snaked around his waist and caught him just in time. The air was forced from his lungs as the rapid thrusting sends a deluge of pain sweeping across his senses. Low, guttural moans punctuate each thrust, each violation into his being. A hand reaches up to his mouth, gently wiping away the small bit of saliva at the corner of Zel's mouth. The sounds leaving the chimera's lips no longer resemble anything human; anguish marked by the sobs of a wounded animal. The hand leaves his face with a soft caress, disappearing from Zel's view. The touch to his shaft ignites another burning jolt of agony. Too weakened from his previous orgasms, Zel hangs limply as he's pushed towards the darkness of the returning pleasure.

"Stay with me, Ishibara, you're almost there..."

Encouraged despite himself, Zel tries to find a focus to lock onto. His hand moves, holding onto the arm wrapped around his midsection. The harsh pounding comes faster now, fueling the heat gathering in his groin. Choked sobs escape the chimera as tears solidify into tiny gemstones on the bed. It hurts; he wants to come so badly...

"Not yet, Ishibara..."

Of course. Have to hold on to it, make it last, extend the pain. His master would be so mad, and the punishment... The very thought brings a loud, strangled cry as Zelgadis fights his release with nothing more than a tattered will. Clear drops fall to his master's hand; the chimera's sobs increase in intensity as he begins losing the battle over his abused body.

"Good boy, come for me now..."

The rush from his body took with it the very last of Zel's strength. He sagged bonelessly in those arms now, small hiccupping cries the only sound he's capable of now.

"Good, Ishibara... very good..."

Somewhere, Zel's heart glows as only that of one thoroughly abased and forever dependant upon the desires of another can. Yet another piece of self was stripped away as the soothing fingers of sleep, and those of his master, began to take him.

"Dear Ishibara. You will be perfect for me..."

A blanket was pulled over him, lips brushing across his damp forehead, and Zelgadis was alone. He spied a strand of hair on his pillow, letting his fingertips rest near it as he succumbed to sleep, his last thought that of the pale blue being rather pretty...

present

Gourry walked close behind Xelloss through the intangible energy path, not wanting to know the consequences if he got lost in the weird place.

Reminds me of that bad roast beast we had. He keeps his eyes on the Mazoku's back, fighting down a need to grab onto Xelloss' cape for a safety line. Hating the growing nervousness he felt in his heart, Gourry tried to get his mind on something else. "Ne, Xelloss?"

"Mmmmyeeessss?"

"You said you knew Seirin, right? How? Is that the thing at Tupuxy Forest you mentioned?"

I really do have to get in your head one day, Gou-kun, to know why you don't... Silly me, how better to keep your enemies guessing. Xelloss' steps slowed imperceptibly now. Gourry still had to maintain a slight jog to keep up.

"Tupuxy Forest. Yes, that's where I first met Seirin and one of his many 'pets'." Gourry made another face behind his face guard, but said nothing as Xelloss continued.

I was... meeting someone there. They sent word that they would be late but that they'd be at the crossing in Tupuxy. With idle time and nothing to do, I decided to see what was around, as I had heard of another Mazoku claiming the area. It pays to know where the boundaries are mind you..."

"This other Mazoku, was Seirin?"

"You could say that, yes..."

past

Xelloss was standing around, admiring the flora of the shaded forest. While not as foreboding as one would expect of a Mazoku owned forest, there was a certain "something" in the air as Xelloss made his way.

Definitely Mazoku. But different from others I'm met...

Xelloss walked slowly, not for caution's sake, but just because he had no reason to hurry. He tapped his staff in his hand, wondering if he should try learning how to whistle.

If I haven't mastered it after fifteen odd centuries, I don't think I ever will.

The scene was peaceful enough. Xelloss noted the birds warbling their mating song that drifted down from the branches. He could see the furry creatures that ran and hide as he came to close, though the younger ones kept a curious eye on the Mazoku. His beastly kin seemed to know he was family and either went about their business, or walked along beside him for an occasional scratch.

Always part of the pack, eh, Metallium?

If he were human, or perhaps if he could remember when he had been, Xelloss would go so far as to say the place had a certain majesty to it. So it was a slight shock to see a naked human crawling on all fours near a small stream.

I have seen weirder, however...

Xelloss didn't say anything, merely content to keep the human in sight as he stayed in the shadows. The wolves that had been tagging along seemed to get the message and left both the Mazoku and his target alone. The human appeared to be a young woman, no older than twenty. She didn't act like too many humans Xelloss knew, content to remain as a beast as she skipped upstream.

Spell? Curse? Hmm, curiosity killed the cat, and a Mazoku brought it back...

So he watched and followed, wondering if the woman had a destination in mind. From an aesthetic point, Xelloss admitted she was lovely for a human. Her body was firm and in good shape, so she wasn't lazy obviously. Her dark hair fell over his shoulders in quiet waves, occasionally catching a soft breeze that seem to bring a slight smile to her face. Rich, brown, oval eyes were set in a pale, smooth face. Her nose was neither too big, nor small, with a quaint upturn at the very end. Rosy lips finished her innocent look; she looked more appropriate in a castle somewhere, not naked in a forest.

Unless she's a forest nymph, but that still doesn't explain why she's crawling on her hands and knees... hello, what's this?

A familiar feeling akin to a brief, electrical charge, signaled the presence of another Mazoku in the area. Xelloss slipped further in the shadow as he watched how the girl would react.

Are they related in some way, this human and the one I feel?

"Angel. Come here, dearest. Time to go home."

The young maiden lifts her head up to the sound of the voice. She scrambles quickly, looking for all the world as she lives to reach that person as fast as she can. Xelloss' smile faded a fraction as she finally stopped in front of an attractive man; a beautiful creature were he human.

Nice mask.

"There you are, little one. Have you enjoyed yourself today, my pet?"

Neutral violet eyes observed the scene carefully. The Mazoku reached down, stroking and petting the girl like the fondest of pets. She responded in kind, nuzzling close to his legs, never speaking unless he asked her a direct question. The trickster priest wore a blank mask as the Mazoku slipped a hand down to caress the maiden's body, ghosting over her bare breast before resting between her legs for several minutes. A dark flush rose to the girl's skin, her hips shifting as she barely contained herself. The hand left, leaving the poor girl in a state of wanting.

"Good girl, luv. Shall we go home, dearest?" The Mazoku smiled down at his pet, running his fingers through her hair as the maiden whimpered softly. "Perhaps play a game or two and..." He stopped, lifting his eyes to look around. The smile became more of a smirk as he spoke out loud enough to be heard by Xelloss.

"It's rude to spy on people."

"So who was spying?" Xelloss stepped out from behind a tree, his smiling demeanor in place.

"Ah, forgive me. I hadn't expected to meet any 'kin' out in this part." The Mazoku stepped back, bowing. "Seirin."

"Xelloss. Interesting pet you have, Seirin. You're doing?"

"You could say that. Of course, not many approve of my having them." At this Seirin gave a soft smile, the girl still kneeling beside him. "And I gather you don't either."

"Posh. What you do with humans is no concern of mine. I don't see much use in slaves, but that's just a personal preference."

"Oh, you misunderstand, sir Xelloss. But come, I'll explain along the way." Seirin made a small gesture and began walking towards the north. "By the way, her name is Lamia. [4]"

"You tamed her well if that's the case."

Seirin only laughed as he led Xelloss back the way he traveled. "I don't think she's quite that ugly, or I daresay I wouldn't bother."

"Aesthetics, of course." Xelloss followed the Mazoku, remembering the way just in case. "You're rather confident to show a stranger to your domain..."

"Posh, as you say. One, everyone knows the great Xelloss. What Mazoku hasn't heard the the Massacre of Gold?"

"How poetic."

"Quite. I do feel a bit saddened by their loss. The golds make such beautiful pets. And once trained, they're absolutely stunning."

"I suppose that's one way of looking at it. That still doesn't explain bringing me along. How do you know I won't betray the information?"

"Well, I don't, really. That's the fun part, the risk. But I'm not that crazy. I'm showing you my home, not my domain."

"Ah, very clever."

"Thank you." Seirin finally brought Xelloss to a clearing with two trees standing side by side. Xelloss tapped his chin before glancing at the Mazoku.

"Gate?"

"Yes. I thought it easier than the usual method." Seirin looked down at Lamia, who scampered to the trees and sang a soft c-note. The space between buckled inward until a vortex of teal energy could be seen. Seirin glanced in the trickster priest's direction, silently daring him to follow as Lamia went through. Xelloss shrugged and went through, followed by Seirin. The actually walk through pocket space was relatively short, bringing the trio out in front of a stately looking house large enough to make the richest Lord envious. Lamia scuttled to the door, rapping the knocker before settling down to wait. The door is pulled open just as Xelloss and Seirin arrive. The inside is just as impressive as the outside, but the thing that catches Xelloss is the multitude of nude or nearly nude humans residing here. Many of them immediately crawled up to Seirin, vying for his attention. He merely smiled, patting a few, then led Xelloss to another room. A lone human, male with shiny gold hair, greeted Seirin by pecking him on the cheek, then went and poured two glasses of a dark, red liquid into a pair of intricate stone goblets. He slips into the background as Seirin and Xelloss each take a goblet and relax, as much as they're wont to do.

"Blood wine. Fresh kill."

"Very, but as enjoyable as it is, I don't think it's why you brought me here."

"No, it's not." Seirin set his drink down, gazing out a large window. "You agree that Mazoku like to play with their victims, correct?"

"Essentially. Play, mislead, manipulate. Typical Mazoku fare."

"Well, this is no different. Play, manipulate... only instead of mis leading, I just lead. Much as we know how our victims will act during those moments of redirection, so I know what my pets will do."

"A novel way to look at it. Still, one doesn't get the satisfaction from the emotions generated when you twist things..."

At this, Seirin chuckles. "I can neither confirm nor deny what you say as true."

"So what would you confirm?"

"Only that there is more than one way for a Mazoku to get that which they desire."

"But of course. Half the fun is finding out just how many ways there are."

"Indeed, for instance..."

The two Mazoku engaged in conversation for hours on end. Only when the moon had rose and set did Xelloss finally stand up.

"While this has been a delightful change of pace, I'm afraid I must be going."

"Of course, I'll accompany you to the gate." Seirin rose as well, leading Xelloss back through his home. Xelloss noticed a significant drop in the number of humans this time. I suppose even he knows the need humans have of sleep. They were silent as they made their way back to the door, until a thought popped into Xelloss head.

"You didn't try and kill me."

"And throw my own life away in the pitiful hope of trying to gain favor? I'm many things, but stupid isn't one of them."

"Maamaa..."

The absence of the moon left the sky colored black by the time the two made it back to the gate. Seirin bowed, the air of formality a shield around him.

"You will come back again, I hope? It is rare I can find a sensible Mazoku to converse with in these times."

"I am always on call, but if my lady permits, then I may see my way back here."

"Ah." Seirin activated the gate and stepped back. With a nod, Xelloss stepped through, back to Tupuxy forest. He wasn't on any mission or task at the moment, so chose to simply walk back to his previous spot. It was a bit aways, but Xelloss was hardly ever in a hurry for anything.

The Trickster Priest was near his starting spot when he heard a strangled cry off to his left. The negative emotions nearly saturated the area, leaving him curious once again. He followed the patterns to the source, using the night for cover. Normally, Xelloss could turn a blind eye to anything, and he would do so again, but it didn't mean even he didn't feel a faint echo of... dislike? Close enough, as he watched the scene being played. His face never wavered as the young man was repeatedly raped and forced into submission. His assailant either didn't mind or didn't care about the screams he drew from his victim. If what he felt was any indication, Xelloss was certain the attacker was Mazoku and simply fed off the emotions anyway. The power of this Mazoku was strong; Xelloss knew he'd have a tough fight if he tried to engage him. Still...

"Xelloss, come, I have something for you to do."

"At once, milady."

Xelloss turned to the scene one last time. From what he could see, the young man had been effectively broken. When Mazoku whispered something to him, the poor man simply inclined his head with a soft whimper.

"There there, you'll make a nice little pet..."

Xelloss paused for a moment, thinking.

What you do with humans is no concern of mine...

...there is more than one way for a Mazoku to get that which they desire.

He sighed, then simply turned and phased away.

interlude 5

He's beginning to understand now.

Zelgadis never truly thought of himself as beautiful. Quite the opposite, in fact. But here, finally learning his place in the great scheme of it all, he knew not only was he beautiful, but he was a treasure. It explained the great pains taken with his training. It made sense now why his lord was so strict. One doesn't buy a diamond just to let it gather dust. It must be carefully shined and attended to with the utmost concern that only one who understands the inherent loveliness of such things can give. So too must his lord bring out the full potential in his own charm...

...even if it was the most painful and humiliating of training.

Currently, the enticing chimera was shackled on his back to a barrel shaped display, his body arched uncomfortable. He was blindfolded, making him all the more sensitive to touch. Zel whimpered as he felt others preparing him, rubbing oils into his skin, gilding his lips, turning him into a decoration. Even his blindfold was for show more than practicality. His heart was beating triple time in his chest. Up until now it had only been him and his lord. Now, Zel was going to be shown to others.

A sharp gasp left him as Zelgadis felt the now familiar push of a phallus. His own length was wrapped tight, preventing any accidental release. He whimpered softly, a spark of fear growing inside him. Where was his lord?

A gentle caress to his cheek by knowing fingers calmed the distraught creature immediately. He almost purred at the secure touch of his lord. Almost.

"It's time, Ishibara. I know you will enchant them as surely as you have me. You remember your lessons well, do you not?

To answer, Zel simply moaned, his hips rocking seductively.

"Very good. It's time. You won't fail me, lovely one."

No, he wouldn't fail. He knew what his lord wanted; Zel had been trained for this after all. And what a submissive picture he would paint, moaning and gasping as the spectators gathered round, petting and stroking and testing his sensitivity. Each teasing brush of flesh further adding to the growing ache/pain that had become ritual in his life now. Zel knew now this only enhanced his appeal as his body writhed almost delicately. He inclined his head to every touch, pouting as fingers ran across his lips. Yes, even like this, he now understood his own comeliness.

All too soon it ended, and Zel was left alone. He sighed; Zel hated this part the most. Far safer to be doing something, to be used for his lord's pleasure.

Voices floated towards him. Usually he simply ignored them, but Zel recognized his lord's voice, and it sounded upset. Not good, he might be on the receiving end after whatever it was making his lord angry had left. Curious as well as fearful, he strained to listen to the voices.

"I can't believe you're doing this again."

"Like you complained the first time."

"I didn't know how you were training them the first time. Silly me for not finding out sooner."

"So what do you plan to do about it anyway?"

"It's clear you've already broken him. Yet you still continue to train him, why?"

"Because he's so much more than the others. Look at him. With my hand, he will be perfection itself."

"And you plan on using him to get to her, don't you?"

"Can you think of anything better to give?"

"Yes, actually, I can. I tell you where to find it, you give him to me."

The voices quieted down after this, the words too muffled for him to hear. So caught up was his in trying to listen that the sudden brush across his cheek startled him. Not daring to speak, he only moaned curiously.

"There there, my ishibara. Do not be afraid. You're simply being given to a new master now."

A new master? Something told Zel this wouldn't be like training. There was a finality to his lord's voice. He didn't get a chance to protest. Zel was already being untied and prepared for traveling. He nearly panicked at the speed of it all, but his lord greeted him one last time.

"You'll behave, won't you? Just like I taught you, ishibara."

Yes, of course, how foolish of him. Zel went peacefully after that, accepting whatever was done to him. Strangely enough, he was treated rather carefully, something he wasn't use to. He was bathed without being touched. Cleansed without being paddled. Stranger still, he was clothed. Clothed? During all of this, the blindfold was kept on. He nearly fell over when he was allowed to walk; it'd been so long that he wasn't use to it. The stumble brought an immediate blush of shame to the chimera's face, but the person guiding him merely waited until he got some kind of coordination back and gingerly made his way to a bed. It was there that the blindfold was finally taken off.

What pretty eyes. They look like pearls.

Zel guessed this was his new master. His thoughts were confirmed when the Mazoku spoke.

"Don't worry. Far as I'm concerned, you're training is over. Consider this your home for now, and we'll get started on your new training."

New training? Before he could stop himself, a low, pitiful whine escaped Zel at the thought of some form of new training. He barely got through his old training...

"Oh, nothing like that," his master said. "This will simply help you to heal from your ordeal. You won't have to go through that again. Now, the first thing to learn is how to speak when you want to. Tell me, do you have a name? And is there something you'd like to know?"

He was being allowed to speak? It had been so long. But his new lord had asked. Zel wasn't sure what to make of any of it, but the sight of his new lord waiting patiently erased any confusion. Licking dry lips, his spoke, though his voice was only a whisper.

"M-my name... is..." What was his name again? He thought back to what he was always called by his former lord. "I was called Ishibara..."

"Yes, I know. But before that, did you have a name?"

Zel thought again. Almost everything from his previous life was lost to him, he felt. Even if he could remember, he felt it would hurt too much if he did. Still, there was a flash of something... a simple smile... a friend...

"Z-Zel.. Zelgadis..."

"Zelgadis. A nice name. Do you have any questions Zelgadis?"

At this, Zel nodded, feeling a tiny amount of courage coming back to him. "What... what is... your name... my lord?" The courage left quickly when he saw the scowl. He jumped up, ready to kneel at his lord's feet, but was pushed back to the bed rather carefully.

"It's not you, Zelgadis. I'm still trying to understand your old training. You don't have to call me lord. My name is Seirin. I think that's enough today. You should rest now."

Seirin... Zel thought the name rather nice as the sleeping spell cast on him quickly took effect, leaving him in a peaceful slumber.

present

Gourry didn't know what was worse, being surrounded by a bunch of Mazoku and unable to unsheathe his sword, being treated by same said Mazoku as some kind of toy...

...or watching Dolphin treat Zelgadis as her own little kitten.

I'm doing this for Zel, I'm doing this for Zel, I'm doing this for Zel...

From what Xelloss told him of Seirin, Gourry was hard put not to just drive the Sword of Light right through his heart the moment he saw the Mazoku. Xelloss must have sensed this, because he quickly maneuvered the blond to another place, keeping an eye on him to make sure Gourry really didn't try to do what he wanted to. But then Gourry had other things to worry about.

"Why Xelloss, I didn't think you'd ever bring anything. What is it?!"

Gourry was again grateful for the face guard to hide the wince at the shrill, child-like voice of Dolphin. One look from Xelloss told him to deal. Sighing inwardly, Gourry did as practiced, lowering down to one knee as if pledging his loyalty to the blue-haired psycho.

"My lady Kaiou-sama, allow me to present a true knight in shining armor. He has slain dragons, rescued maidens, never once thinking of the dangers to himself. A dying breed, if I dare to say. Their are not many like this one left." He nudged Gourry discreetly with his staff. Gourry made another face, but took one of Dolphin's hands, resting his forehead to it as his face guard wouldn't let him actually kiss her. Thank the gods for small favors.

"Oh how romantic! He's a real knight, you say? Would he fight for me? Oh would he, please?!"

Man, Xelloss has her pegged.

"Of course, lady Kaiou-sama. Would you perhaps have something around you don't need anymore?"

Dolphin nodded enthusiastically, already calling one of her underlings forward. Xelloss did a quick mental assessment of the demon, then nodded at Gourry. He figured the swordsman's anger and discomfort would now have a focus, making the fight a short one.

Finally, I can do something besides just stand here.

Gourry drew the sword, for a moment imagining it was Seirin in front of him. The cannon fodder smirked, thinking nothing of a sword. They were both surprised to see it glow a bright red for a moment. Gourry turned his head towards Xelloss.

"I thought it would only be a worthy fight if I evened out the playing field a bit, lady Kaiou-sama."

"Oh, yes, how true!"

Behind the guard, it was Gourry's turn to smirk. The Mazoku hesitated now, unsure of how to take this twist. Perfect opening.

Poor thing. Gou-kun must really be upset. Least it was relatively quick, if messy. Careful, Gourry, or they might think you're the Mazoku...

Dolphin clapped her hands together, laughing delightfully at the fight. "Bravo! Oh, he did that so well!"

Xelloss flashed his 'knight' another look. Gourry held the hilt of his sword a little tighter, but obediently went and knelt before Dolphin once, holding her hand to his forehead. The Dark General giggled at this display, all but blushing.

"Oh he's so gallant! Wherever did you find him, Xelloss?"

With a smile and a wagging finger, there's only one way for the Trickster priest to answer. "Sore wa himitsu desu. But I am pleased he meets your approval, lady Kaiou-sama."

"Oh, he does, he does! Oh please tell me you'll be staying for awhile, Xelloss?" The blue haired Mazoku turned hopeful eyes towards the demon in question.

Xelloss sighed to himself. Good thing she is crazy. If she knew how, she could just keep us here. He merely inclined his head in a half bow. "I have no pressing business at the moment, lady Kaiou-sama. I would be honored."

"Wonderful!" Dolphin quickly dragged the still wincing Gourry with her to her throne in the center back. Again, he had to keep repeating his mantra when he again saw Zelgadis kneeling next to it. He didn't get a chance to do much else before Dolphin practically shoved him into place on the other side.

"You stay right there. Ooh! It's like having my own valiant knight!" With that she flopped into her seat, holding a hand out to Zel. "Here, Ishi! Sit with me..."

He is not your damn pet!

Gourry's thoughts were his own, though, as Zel obediently crawled into her lap. She didn't seem interested in touching the chimera in a sexual manner, simply cooing softly as she stroked his hair. She even went so far as to feed him from her own hand, though she was at least kind enough to give him more human fare.

Zel... I swear I'll get you out of this.

Dolphin tapped her foot on the floor, signaling for Zel to climb down and accompany her as she went around to see what other trinkets her guests had found. Gourry stayed where he was, having a good vantage point to see what he was up against if it did come down to a fight. His eyes fell on the one Xelloss said had the tear. Makouri. He appeared to be keeping a low profile, though Gourry could see how his eyes never strayed from Dolphin.

Either it's love, obsession, or something else that I probably don't want to know about.

Gourry didn't know how long he had to stand there watching the once proud shaman crawl around after Dolphin's ankles. Xelloss often looked in his direction, his silent meaning clear. He didn't like it, but he understood. So Gourry simply watched and learned.

And questioned.

Seirin wasn't acting like someone who got off controlling people. If anything, he often knelt down to whisper to Zel whenever Dolphin was preoccupied. Then there was the way he looked at Zel...

Almost like he cares... no, it's his fault Zel's like this now. But still, I don't get it...

Makouri, on the other hand, looked at the shaman like he was a piece of meat. Gourry hid a snarl behind his face guard when Makouri reached down to casually touch or fondle Zel any time he came too close. Gourry wanted to shove the Sword of Light down his throat. He wanted to cut each finger off and feed it to the smirking demon. He wanted...

A tap on his shoulder from Xelloss told Gourry he needed to pay attention to something. looking carefully, he saw Makouri holding a small jewel box out to Dolphin. The dark general giggled, but Gourry guessed the box held the Nyx Tear. She took it, then turned and hid it on Zel.

"Take good care of that for me, Ishi."

This is too easy. I can grab them both at once. I'd still like to cut the smile off that Makouri guy...

Finally, Dolphin called for them to go feed again.

Oh please... LEAVE!

Xelloss threw a final message at Gourry, silently screaming at Gourry to get the tear above all else as he filed out with the rest of the Mazoku. As soon as the door closed shut, Gourry was at Zel's side in a flash, cupping the trembling young man's chin.

"Zel...?"

Blue eyes that once held a guarded look to them were now windows to a soul ripped open. Gourry nearly jumped at the faint sound of "clinks," only to realize they were Zel's tears.

"Zel, I'm going to get you out of here..."

Gourry didn't think Zel would object, much less put up a fight. Still, the chimera shook his head violently, jerking away from Gourry's hand. The swordsman blinked in confusion, not understanding the reluctance on Zel's part to leave.

"No? You don't want to stay here, do y... oh, the face guard..." Gourry lifted it up, letting Zel see his face clearly. "See? It's me. Nothing to be scared of. Just let me..."

It was the complete and utter shame that hit him. The depth of which seemed almost inhuman. Gourry thought no man should ever have to suffer to such a point. To see one he called friend like this...

"God... Zel... I'm sorry... I didn't mean..."

"Can't..."

"What?" For a moment Gourry thought he imagined the choked whisper. It was so faint he wasn't sure if it came from outside or inside his mind. "Zel?"

"Can't. Can't."

No, it was him... "I don't understand... can't what?"

"He can't leave. At least not until he knows it safe to do so... with the Tear."

Gourry swung around, his sword already in hand. The very tip aimed less than a centimeter from the throat of a voice he forced himself to remember.

"Seirin."

"So, Xelloss did speak to you, did he? I'm not surprised, even if he only has half the story. Oh, don't bother with the Hikari no Ken. I'm only half here..."

Gourry blinked. To his eyes, Seirin was transparent. What the...? "I don't know what kind of trick you're pulling..."

"No trick. I merely came to give some instructions to Zel. I didn't know Xelloss and I were working for the same goal. If I had, I would have collaborated."

The blond felt nervous, which was always a bad sign. He didn't know how long the others would feed, and he needed to get Zel and the tear out of there. "Look you, I don't have time..."

"You've more time than you think. I've made sure the feeding takes a long time. Don't worry, you and Zel will be long gone before they come back."

Complete confusion. "What in the hell are you talking about?"

Seirin cocked his head, looking directly at Gourry. "You haven't figured it out?"

"NO! Figured what out?" he's stalling, he wants to get us both caught. I'm not letting them take Zel again.

"It's simple. I'm the one who gave Makouri the Tear, in exchange for Zel's freedom." At this, Seirin raised his hand. "Don't start. If you want to hear the whole story before they come back, simply be quiet and listen." Seirin knelt down to Zel's level, whispering in his ear again. As soon as he was done, Zel crawled silently over to Gourry as if seeking refuge.

"Good, stay with him, Zel, and you'll be safe. Now, for you. I'm sure you're quite ready to have my head and all, but hear me out. Xelloss was wrong. I don't have time to explain everything, but I am not what he perceived me to be. Now, as for the Tear, I bought Zel's freedom with it. Unfortunately, I couldn't undo what was done to him. And I didn't wish to leave the Tear in Makouri's hands either. You've no idea the trouble that would cause. So, with Zel's permission, as much as he was able to give under the circumstances, we decided to come to Kaiou-sama's gathering. I knew she'd probably think of him as a pet, loathed as I was to do that to him. I needed her to feel secure enough to leave the tear with him, then come back and tell him to run with it. I'd meet with him in a designate spot after making sure the blame was laid somewhere else, then hopefully with the Tear back in my possession, I could finally help his rehabilitation."

That was a mouthful. If Gourry was confused before when he watched Seirin, he was doubly so know after listening to him. His expression must have reflected this, as Seirin only sighed resignedly.

"Look, I'll explain everything later. Get him outside and Zel will take you to the meeting place. I'll join you later. Just keep him and the Tear out of site." Seirin waved a hand in the air, opening a gate that appeared to lead to the outside. "Don' worry, this gate is safe."

"How do I know that? And why should I even trust you?"

"Simple, you don't have a choice." Seirin clapped his hand once. To Gourry's horror, Zel left his side and half-walked, half-stumbled through the gate. The swordsman threw Seirin a dirty, enraged look before running after the chimera. "Zel, wait!"

A strange tingling in the air, and the blond found himself not too far from where Xelloss had first got them inside. He didn't have time to look as he caught a glimpse of Zel heading off to the south. Swearing, Gourry chased after him, following a few yards before skidding to a halt outside an old looking shack of sorts. Zel was at the door, pushing weakly against it. Gourry winced. The shaman must be in poor condition to have so much trouble. He walked up to the door, sighing as Zel only skittered away to let Gourry push it open. Inside was a well made bed, a roaring fire, some supplies, and a letter addressed to Zel. Gourry ignored everything for the moment. His one concern for the moment was Zel. He bent down to lift Zelgadis in his arms. The feel of the slender body trembling from L-sama only knew what broke Gourry's heart.

"Shh, it'll be okay, I promise."

Gourry laid his friend down on the bed. When all else fails, rest. And it looked like Zel could use all the rest he could get.

He was right. It wasn't long before the chimera's breathing slowed to an even pace, broken by the occasional whimper. Gourry waited a few more minutes, then took stock of the supplies. More than enough to stay there for a few days, if not a week. Gourry quickly got a bit on the fire, thinking it would be ready when Zel awoke. With nothing else to do, Gourry picked up the letter.

I don't think he's in any frame of mind anyway. Gourry felt only a twinge a guilt as he opened it, his eyes following carefully.

Zel, if you're reading this then I can assure you that you're quite safe for the moment. I know this has been extremely hard for you and I hated having to put you through it again. Still, I couldn't have gotten the Nyx Tear away from Makouri without you. Hopefully with this I can free you of the pain now trapping your soul.

Please, do not leave this place, it's safer here than anywhere else at the moment. I've left supplies and instructions in case you've forgotten what to do for yourself. Again, with any luck, that will change. I promise to make you as whole as I possibly can return you to being. Maybe that will help my poor judgment from so long ago...

Hide the tear in a loose board near the side of the fireplace. Keep a fire going at all times if you can. it will help with the cloaking. I'll come for you as soon as I can.

You're showing great strength, Zel. I know you'll become the man you once were. For now, just wait for me.

- Seirin.

This isn't making any kind of sense?! What the hell is going on anyway? Why is Seirin trying to get the Tear from Makouri when he gave it to him in the first place? And what's this about buying Zel's freedom? Is Xelloss keeping something from me?

Or... maybe he himself doesn't know the whole story...

Gourry threw the letter down in disgust. Now he had even more questions than before. He'd thought Seirin was the one he wanted to kill, but so far, it was looking to be just the opposite.

So if Seirin isn't the one who hurt Zel... who is?

A few hours had past, and Gourry felt even more jittery and nervous than when he first got here. Every shadow became suspect. A part of him tried to rationalize that Seirin probably took precautions against nosey Mazoku, but just looking over at Zel just made him fearful all over again.

At least he's starting to walk now.

It took some coaxing on his part, but Gourry managed to get Zel on his feet instead of all fours. He was dismayed at how unsteady the chimera seemed when he finally stood on his own. Still, there was a spark of determination that Gourry didn't think was completely his imagination. Anything was cause for hope as far as he was concerned. He still had to 'guide' Zel for doing things on his own, but he was doing it while standing upright.

And I still don't know exactly who to kill for this...

Currently, Gourry was sitting on the bed with his back resting on the wall. Zel was sleeping in the same manner, his head on Gourry's shoulder. After getting Zel to eat and getting him back in some decent clothes... Courtesy of Seirin, probably... he had just talked to Zel about inconsequential things, sometimes falling back on the memories of their travels as "Lina's gang." A couple of times Gourry thought he heard a soft chuckle at some of the more insane stunts they went through, which was enough to keep him talking until he felt the all too even breathing of a soul in slumber. So he let him sleep, keeping one hand on the Hikari no Ken just in case.

"I see you and he are alright."

The swordsman tensed. While his grip tightened, he surprised himself by not bringing it to fore. "Seirin."

"Last time I checked." The Mazoku stepped out from a shadow in the corner. His eyes looked over with some concern at the sleeping chimera... something Gourry halfway managed to convince himself was a trick of the light and nothing more. "He is well?"

"Yes, no thanks to..."

"I didn't do this to him."

"That's what you say... but I trust you about as much as I trust Xelloss."

"I'm flattered you trust me even that much." Seirin took a chair that hadn't been there before and sat down. "Now if you wish to know the whole story, you'll have to hear me out from start to finish."

He seems so... tired... no, just a trick. Gourry kept his thoughts to himself and his hand on his sword. One arm instinctively wrapped around Zel's shoulder, making it a bit difficult to ignore when the shaman just moved all the closer because of it. "I'm listening."

Sighing, Seirin leaned back in the chair. "A lot of this I will take blame for, in that I was too shortsighted to see the truth. However, unlike others of my kind, I happen to have a conscious." Seeing the look on Gourry's face made the demon chuckle. "Don't look so shocked. There are more of us who do than you may ever believe."

"I thought the whole point to being a Mazoku was not having a conscious."

"In most cases. However, having once been human, it's hard to forget. And having once been a healer at that... well..." He gave a noncommittal shrug. "But neither here nor there. As I was saying, I didn't see the truth until many suffered much like Zelgadis. See, I don't train anyone. I especially don't force. Too me, it ruins the entire effect."

"Just what are you talking about...?!"

"I'm getting there, if you'd let me. I received all my concubine from Makouri. For him, it was all about breaking the spirit. Once that was done, he'd often grew tired of them. Before I came along, he just killed them." Seirin looked over towards the fire, therefore not seeing the complete and utter hatred pass across Gourry's face. "I had happened across one while coming to 'check' on him. There was something odd about him, and I felt would be best if I try and find out what it was. He saw my interest in them and figured it would be easier to just give them to me. I, fool that I was, believed his implications that everything was done with consent."

"So when did you figure it out?"

"When a young girl nearly died from the injuries his 'training' had caused. Even then, there was little I could do to stop him. So instead I began taking all those he was bored with or willing to give to me and tried to help them recover from the trauma. I've had a seventy- percent success rate."

"But you still didn't stop him from getting new people..." Like Zel.

"I wasn't strong enough to shut him down completely. I did manage to steer the situation to a point where it was not in his interest to continue getting as many as he once was. But some slip past me. Zelgadis was one. I didn't know he even had another one until I went to one of his 'demonstrations'."

"That's when you gave him the Tear, isn't it?"

"You're not as simple as I was led to believe... Yes, that's when I traded it for Zel. I knew he coveted it, if only to try and get him closer to Dolphin. His obsession with her is the one weakness I know I can exploit."

"I don't get it. I don't get you. Since when do..."

"Mazoku care? In truth, I can't tell you. Perhaps I was not changed completely. Maybe there is a small part of me that remembers. No, that's not true. I remember alright. And as soon as I can find the opportunity to do so, I'm going to make sure Makouri doesn't take another slave again..."

The words were said so calmly, Gourry almost missed the underline steel they held. Blinking, he looked into Seirin's face.

He found himself looking back.

...he hates Makouri? "Why?" Gourry didn't even know he spoke aloud until Seirin looked back up at him.

"Why do I hate him? I do. I won't bother trying to hide that. And contrary to popular belief, no, I don't enjoy it." Seirin cupped his hands together. A small flame ignites, in which Gourry can see the image of a lovely girl with dark, short hair and blue eyes bearing a slight resemblance to the Mazoku. "My sister disappeared many moons before I myself was changed. She was gathering herbs in Tupuxy Forest. I have nothing conclusive, but it's not hard after having watched how Makouri operates to know what happened." The flame died away. Seirin gazed once more at the fire, his eyes clouded with something... memory... regret...

Or perhaps both. Gourry couldn't stop the wave of sympathy he felt. Demon or no, he knew pain when he saw it. "I'm sorry..."

"Don't waste it on me. Be sorry for the son she left behind. To this day I don't know what happened to him."

"Son?"

"Son. Don't ask me, I don't know much. I was going to visit when news of her disappearance reached me. I just assumed the father took the child, but I could never find him. I found the father a few years later, not in the best of condition. He couldn't tell me what happened to the child... my nephew. I never learned the child's name. I... just assumed he's no more. Perhaps his soul is with his mother. I cannot say."

"So you never saw him?"

"No. All I know is his eyes were as blue as his mothers."

This sucks. I... I don't think he's trying to trick me. Not that I trust him, but... his sister looked familiar to me... "What was her name?"

"...Zelga. It's tradition from the village we came from for the children to take some form of their mother's name. So I imagined he was named Zelrin or Zelgeron or..."

She looked like... "Zelgadis."

"Yes something like..." Both men stopped, looked at each other, then looked at the sleeping chimera.

"...L-sama..."
