I Am A Rock

I am a Rock. by Simon and Garfunkle

A winters day,
In a deep and dark December,
I am alone.
Gazing from my window to the streets below,
On a freshly fallen silent showed of snow.

Zelgadiss Greywords walked alone on a deserted road. It was evening and snow fluttered to the ground. Everything was so quiet, no one passed him, not and animals made any sound, only the sound of his feet crunching in the snow echoed through the night.

He left the small company right after the ceremony. He pulled the dark blue cloak tighter about his shoulders.

It was a gift from her.

Zel bowed his head as the wind picked up blowing the falling snow into his face. As he walked along his thoughts kept returning to her,

Why did she leave him like that? He thought darkly.

I am a Rock.
I am an Island.
I've been walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That nothing penetrate.

All through the ceremony it seemed like he secluded himself; put up walls. People sitting near him edged away ever so slightly. Why was even there? Why did it turn out this way? Questions like these filled his head constantly.

I have no need of friendship,
Friendship causes pain,
It's loving and it's laughter I disdain.
I am a Rock.
I am an Island.

As Zelgadiss walked along he couldn't help but wonder why he even let himself consider having friends. He didn't think he needed them

Now he knew he didn't.

Why did it have to cause such pain?

Don't talk or love,
Well I've heard the words before.
There sleeping in my memory.

But was it only friendship he had felt, or was it...

He really couldn't tell the difference.

I won't disturb the slumber,
Of feelings that have died;
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a Rock.
I am an Island.

Zel trudged on through the snow. Whatever it was,all he knew was that he didn't want to anything to do with them. He decided to shut away all emotions. Go back to the way he used to be. Quiet, reserved emotionless.

I have my books,
And my poetry to protect me.
I am shielded in my armor;

Zel pulled the cowel of his cloak over his head as he started to enter a small town. AS he walked the street, it seemed that when he passed people, they ceased all activity and watched this lone figure pass by.

Zel pulled his cloak tighter to him When he walked passed a young couple laughing gaily as they came out of a Tavern, arms linked, pain immediately came to him.

Hiding in my room,
Safer in my room.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a Rock,
I am an Island.

Lina why? Zel thought as he remembered the last time he saw her, said her name, last time he held her, the last time she looked at him with her ruby-red eyes. It was the last time she took a breath.

As he walked out of the small town, alone he left all memories of The Infamous Lina Inverse behind. Forever.

And a Rock feels no pain.
And an Island never cries.
