Interlude: Companion

I don't understand her sometimes.

What kind of hero causes more destruction than an army of mazoku?

She's loud, mean, violent, and she always steals my food. I've fought with her over every meal since the day we met. She drags me around (sometimes in drag), forgets I'm there and blasts me along with the enemy, she's obsessed with getting more magic and more money, and she wants to keep my sword! There's no reason why I should be traveling with her.

Okay, so there's one.

I love her.

I just can't say it.

She'd probably just clobber me anyway.

Although, sometimes I think...

It really doesn't matter I suppose. I'll stay with her, help her, and, in my own way, protect her. If she never sees how much I care, at least I can still be with her. That's something at least.

I wonder if it will always be enough.

Maybe it won't have to be.

Thinking like that helps, I'll try to remember that.

Hmm? She's still awake. She looks over to see me keeping guard and smiles. I smile back, and then she closes her eyes.

I sit by the fire and listen to her breathing as it gently slows. She's asleep now, good, she's grumpy when she's been awake all night.

She's muttering in her sleep. I wonder what's bothering her this time, bandits or mazoku?

Oh, a sigh, she must be dreaming about food then.

That's a good idea. I wonder if she'd notice if I had a snack.

What am I? Crazy? Of course she'd notice, this is food after all.

Still...

What was that?

My name.

She said my name.

Not dreaming about food then.

Maybe, just maybe, she's dreaming about me?

That's nuts, it probably was about food and I was trying to steal it from her.

But maybe...
