Rezo's Study, several weeks/months before the first episode of Slayers (the original series)

"This is going to set me back for weeks," angrily muttered Rezo, the Red Priest, a petulant frown marring his face. "What a failure. I spend all that time giving her exactly what she asked for, and she runs screaming off into the night, never to be seen again..."

He reached out across the desktop in front of which he was seated, picking up a random magical artifact in hopes of forgetting what had happened by losing himself in his work. Turning the object, about the size of a human fist, in his fingers, he attempted to probe it using his considerable magic. However, his mind was too disturbed to be able to concentrate properly. The artifacts' secrets eluded all his best efforts, no matter what he tried. After a few minutes of sheer frustration, he couldn't stand it any more and hurled the magical object away from himself as hard as he could. He heard it smash against his study's wall, fall to the ground, and skitter away across the blocks of stone that made up the floor, no doubt to lodge itself irretrievably under some piece of furniture. All this he could tell from sound alone, for the Red Priest Rezo had been born blind, and none of his astonishing magical power had ever been able to change his condition.

For a long time he sat at his desk, livid with anger; anger towards the follower of his who'd abandoned him after he'd invested so much time, research, and energy in changing her form so she'd be better able to do her job. However, a good measure of his anger was directed towards himself, and for good reason. "I should have watched her more closely," he said, finally. "I saw her reaction, the moment she realized how I had changed her. I should have known she wouldn't be able to take it. But I trusted her too much; a mistake which I'll never repeat again."

Rezo knew he needed a powerful new follower, someone to whom he could entrust all kinds of tasks, both magical and mundane. Someone intelligent enough to deal with situations that Rezo wouldn't have the time to deal with by himself. Someone who would work hard and get things accomplished without having to be led by the hand through each step of every process. Someone who Rezo could control should it become necessary... He had a few intriguing ideas about how that particular idea could be implemented.

He even had a likely candidate in mind. The boy would need a bit of... upgrading, true, but Rezo already had had plenty of practice at such things. The Red Priest felt a twinge of conscience at his particular choice, but something in him suppressed it quickly. "After all, just because we're related doesn't make him any less suitable, now does it?"

Rezo knew there was no point in continuing to work today; he was still too angry to concentrate. But first thing tomorrow morning, he'd begin his work anew. He'd start gathering the considerable energy needed to create a powerful new body for his soon-to-be employee, and considering a suitable design for the boy's new form. "Perhaps I should be a little more conservative this time," he mused, "and limit myself to just adding demon and golem to the mix. It'll still accomplish what I need, and maybe this way he'll be less likely to flip out at the sight of his reflection in a mirror..."
