Interlude Four: Brothers

Two brothers, fighting to the death.

That's how it all began.

Two brothers. And afterwards, there was only one.

How could he? The throne was mine! How dare he take it away from me? How dare he steal the life from me....

It was supposed to be my kingdom. My Therilon. Mine to rule, mine to lead. Not his. But he walked away from our duel, and I didn't. He built his castle over my grave.

How I hated him. There is no hate greater than that of the wronged dead. For years I watched over my kingdom - MY kingdom! MINE! - as he ruled in my place. I couldn't stand it, couldn't stand watching his happy life, his growing family, his spawn that would inherit MY kingdom from his murderous hands.

Centuries pass so quickly when your only thoughts are of vengeance. As I watched through the interminable succession of rulers, kings and queens, governing this land to which they had no right, all I could think of was the horrible ways in which I would make them die.

Spirits aren't powerless, you know. Especially not spirits who watch and learn and understand all the secrets of the most powerful family in the world. Especially not a spirit who still possesses the awesome power that comes with Therilonian royal blood.

I waited so long. My rage grew every day, as I was forced to watch this travesty. And rage is power. Such power. Oh, they were so smug, these distant children of my murderous brother, secure in their power and confident of their right to rule. They didn't even suspect that their downfall was waiting and watching directly beneath their feet.

When I struck, with the full force of my centuries of repressed anger, they died like flies. It was glorious! Their true power was as nothing compared to mine. They were nothing, compared to me. Ah, brother, see; your treachery, in the end, goes unrewarded! The Therilon you so gladly ruled over, with my blood dripping from your hands, will be destroyed forever. Even now its very name inspires fear and loathing everywhere. Simply glorious. Everything you worked so hard to build will be destroyed.

There was only one snag in my beautiful revenge. One small problem. One little princess who got away. One last ruler of Therilon. One last descendant of he who killed me.

Amethyst.

For years she was beyond my reach, though I sent minions to all the corners of the globe. But now she has returned, and nothing will stop me from completing my revenge.

Therilon is MY kingdom, brother.

I warned you.
