Part 12

Washu sighed, leaning her head upon her hands. The final explosion and closing of the gate had ruined the majority of the lab on that planetoid and caused extensive damage to the other two. Luckily, her med lab had been on the far side of the planet when the gate's planetoid had been reduced to so much slag and charred, melted plastics and dura-alloys. She had been always a little annoyed with the orbit of her lab's planetoids/moons around their mutual gas giant, but never had she been as happy for those differing orbits as she was now.

Washu rubbed her eyes, her shoulders slumped with weariness. She looked up at the seven columns full of green fluid, indeed the same seven in which she had healed Zel, Lina, Amelia, Firia, Gourry, Rezo, and Kagato. And now seven new people floated within them, unidentified and nameless. These seven were as wounded as the others had been, but they weren't the one she was the most worried about. It was the one within the stasis pod that had her the most worried.

"Rezo, is there any change in Zel's condition?" Washu didn't bother to look over at the stasis pod, which Rezo was standing next to.

"None. The golem has completly become inanimate and is being rejected by his system ... so much pain ..." Rezo shuddered, his eyes closing as tears welled up. "I am the source of so much of his pain .... to all of my family."

A catch in his voice caused Washu to look over at him, her eyes wide. A look of understanding crossed her face as she walked over to him. "I wasn't there when Ryoko needed me ... maybe there was some way I could have helped her resist Kagato, helped her gain her freedom." She wrapped her arms around him, feeling Rezo's tears soak her shoulder, feeling her own tears begin to flow. "But I failed her."

"I failed my baby."

Kagato and Ryoko sneezed suddenly, causing Yosho to look up from where he was attempting to see how much of the mech lab computer was slag and what was working.

"Dust?" Yosho asked.

"No, not at all." Ryoko drifted down as she spoke. She had been at the ceiling trying to replace the lights as well as getting some of them to work. Kagato shrugged, and they all got back to work.
