Part 3

Some deformities have their origins in the very depths of eternal beauty.

- Victor Hugo

Deep within its prison, the darkness stirred.

It had been sleeping, mostly - if that was the word for it - but always semi-aware of its surroundings. It wasn't quite sure how, or why...but with awareness came a limited ability to act.

When the darkness had first realized that it knew where it was - not so long ago, the way it reckoned time - it had also discovered that its prison was unbreachable.

At least, from the inside...

But the darkness also discovered that inside its cell, it could do certain things...

And it had found that human minds could be quite fascinating...

Yes, it had been content to simply observe, at first - but eventually, it had begun to suggest. That was within its limited scope, and it fit very nicely into the plan...

In fact, it was perfect. The perfect way to achieve freedom.

It had found that its human captor was not aware of the presence of the darkness, there in its mental prison...a strange oversight, until the darkness had learned why it was unable to see the world through it's captor's eyes.

It was in it's captor's eyes....

The darkness thought this supremely, ironically amusing. And that fact had also presented to it the plan - and the window for suggestion.

Being imprisoned, the darkness realized it was at the mercy of its captor and its vessel, as long as the keeper remained in control, and on the outside. But if this captor, this soul, ever retreated completely into his mind....

He was fair game.

The darkness had decided to play a little game, a test of sorts. It had never analyzed a human from the inside-out before; it was curious to see what they were made of, mentally speaking. And what a singularly interesting specimen this was! Such a tangled, unhappy soul...there was enough to keep it amused for a millennia.

But enough was enough. Part of the game had been to further the plan...the suggestions, the dream-riddles and enigmatic nightmares were fun, yes, but also served to drive this tortured creature in the directions the darkness wished him to go. And suddenly, without proper warning, all of the carefully planted fears and insinuating doubts were being whisked aside like so many cobwebs. Something, some instinctive desire or need, must have awakened...whatever the cause, it was rather alarming to have one's careful handiwork shrugged off so abruptly.

No, this could not be allowed to develop further.

The darkness sensed the direction of its host's thoughts, and decided to wait and observe a moment longer. It must plan carefully, if a hostile takeover was to be successful....

Deep within the blackness that Rezo the Red Priest had tried a lifetime to overcome, buried in the very heart of an age-old despair, two ruby eyes slitted open.

Wait and see

Wait ......But not for long.
