Part 9

Lina cursed silently to herself. Why did he have to show up? She left so she would stop thinking about him. She remembered he asked her a question. "Hmm? Oh nothing. Nothing at all."

Zel raised an eyebrow. "Lina? What is wrong?" she couldn't really refuse him. She didn't really want to.

"Everything." She replied with a sigh. It felt so good to talk to him. But it was also awkward.

"How so?" Zel asked, looking at the water.

"What Negha said...about living lives to the fullest...I've done that...and I'm not happy." She lied...she had lied straight to his face. She hadn't lived it to the fullest. She never told Zel how she felt...but she couldn't do that...oh no...she couldn't.

Zel just looked at her for a moment. A curious look was on his face and Lina couldn't decipher what it meant. He turned away before she could look anymore.

"Maybe there's something you haven't done yet..." Zel mused, almost to himself.

Lina wanted so much to be in his arms right now. He understood so much...yet knew so little about what she wanted.

"Time's short....Live your life to the fullest." She whispered to herself. She then decided to do something about it. She wouldn't waste anymore time, even if she had all the time in the world.

"What was that?" Zel had heard Lina's whisper apparently and started turning to face her. With one graceful movement, Lina lunged herself forward, wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her lips to his; hoping that she was making the right choice.

When Lina answered that nothing was wrong, it was obvious that she was lying. Upon repetition of his question he was surprised at her response, but tried not to show it. He looked at her with a half-shadowed, whimsical look.

I would make you happy Lina... he thought, turning back to the water. Or give my life trying. If only you'd let me... He heard Lina whisper something. He only caught the words "Time" and "life" so he turned to ask her what she said.

To say Zel was surprised that Lina wrapped her arms around his neck was one thing, but to say he was surprised when she started to kiss him... that was an understatement.

He was stiff with apprehension, not sure what to do. Lina's mouth tugged hungrily at his and he couldn't help but relax a little. If this was truly Lina...Zelgadis placed his arms around her and returned the kiss.

When Zel's lips finally softened to hers, Lina was overjoyed. With her eyes closed, she couldn't tell what his expression was, but she didn't care. she had finally done what she should have done a long time ago.

Zelgadis could be so gentle when he wanted to be. When he placed his arms around her and returned her kiss she shuddered to herself with pleasure. You couldn't tell he was part stone when he acted like this. One might have thought it was a baby's hide and not his.

They sat and embraced each other for many minutes; both enjoying the love the other gave. Finally, Lina pulled away and opened her eyes. Zel did the same and they stared at each other for a long while. A single tear ran down her cheek and Zelgadis quickly brushed it away.

This is what I've been missing. She thought to herself.

"Zel?"

"Yes Lina?" he spoke so softly Lina barely heard him.

"Please make me happy..."

"Forever," he replied, sliding over next to her and putting his arms around her shoulders. He was so strong! She could feel the power that could utterly crush her if he tried, but could destroy mountains to protect her. "Forever I'll make you happy."

Lina closed her eyes and laid against his chest. She could hear his heart beating calmly, while hers threatened to burst from her chest. After a few moments, she drifted off into her first peaceful sleep.
