Chapter Four: The Trickster

A figure sat in the cherry tree outside of Queen Amelia's room. He smiled to himself as she slept, then brushed back some of his hip-length dark purple hair. His priests robes were mostly black and other very dark colors.

"Heh... bad little queen..." he said, waving his finger at Amelia-san's sleeping form. "Don't you know it's not polite to mess with the timeline?" He opened his eyes, revealing them to be catslits, and violet in color. "Not to mention..." he jumped out of the tree and glanced up at her room once more "I owe you one for killing me, Amelia." he said, then phased out.

"Morning, Zelgadis! You're sure up early." Amelia-san said, walking down the stairs and over to the table he was sitting at. Zelgadis was calmly and quietly eating his breakfast and sipping some coffee.

"Good morning, Mirai (That was the name Amelia-san gave them). I've found that Gourry, Lina, and Amelia like to sleep late, so it's best to eat while they're still sleeping. That way you actually get a more or less decent meal, while there's still food left." he said.

"Good idea." Amelia-san sat down and ordered some food. Her and Zelgadis sat quietly as they ate. It was pure luck that Amelia glanced up when she did. Had she not, she might have missed it.

Was that...? No... it's COULDN'T have been... she thought, quite shaken. That COULDN'T have been Xelloss that she just saw. No... he was dead... she'd killed him three years ago. Was it the Xelloss from this time, then? No... it DEFINITALY wasn't that Xelloss. That Xelloss at least had a deceptively friendly appearence to him. The Xelloss that Amelia knew was pure evil, and you knew it the moment you saw him, there was no doubt about it.

But the Xelloss that she knew was dead... so it couldn't have been him. She must have just been seeing things. That had to be... it just had to be.

Yeah...

Just keep telling yourself that, Amelia-san.

"Umm... I'm going to go outside and get some fresh air..." she said with a weak smile, and, before Zelgadiss could object, walked out that door.

That just COULDN'T have been him... there's just no way... she sighed and leaned against a wall of the inn.

"Oh, but it IS me, little queen." a voice from above her said. Amelia-san looked up to see the very person that she had been dreading sitting on the roof. He smiled evilly and jumped down to the ground, where he stood in front of Amelia-san.

"How.. how is this possible!? You're DEAD! I killed you myself!!" Amelia-san WOULD have backed away, but she was already backed into a wall.

"Silly little girl... did you forget about resurrections?" Xelloss smiled again.

"But who would resurrect you?" Amelia-san said, suddenly determined to throw Xelloss off balance enough for her to escape. "It couldn't have been Beastmaster, YOU killed HER and took her position."

"True true... at least you aren't an idiot. L-sama resurrected me, young one."

"L-sama? Why? You don't work for her."

"Heh... Sore wa himitsu desu." And with that, the Xelloss from the future phased out, leaving a very startled and frightened Amelia-san behind.

"No... no..." she whispered "I almost died when I killed him... I wouldn't be able to do it a second time."

"What are you talking about?" Zelgadiss asked as he walked outside the inn.

"N-NOTHING! Hey, what are you doing out here?" Amelia-san pikued. Zel just sighed and pointed inside the inn, where Gourry, Lina, and Amelia-chan were quickly devouring anything in sight.

"Oh..." Ameila-san sweatdropped as well.

From his perch in the astral plane, future-Xelloss watched. An evil smirk appered on his face as he saw Zelgadiss.

"Heh... I may be here to preserve the timeline as is... but I think I'll change some things..." he said to himself. "For instence, lovely chimera... you won't die a virgin, this time, if I have anything to say about it..."

"Sorry, but the chimera is my prey."

Future-Xel turned to see his past self watching him. Humans weren't allowed to see their future self and know it was them, but for some reason it was diffrent with Mozoku... probably because they don't change as much, so their future never is a big surprise. Future-Xel smirked. "But I AM you. So doesn't that make him both of ours? My my... so selfish. You should learn to share."

"I don't share."

"Though luck, then. I'm taking the chimera, whether you like it or not. You can try to stop me, but I assure you, you won't have any luck. Ja ne, self." Future-Xel said, then left.

"...." Xelloss watched where he was. He had been right... if it came down to a fight, Xelloss would need alot of luck to kill his future-self, but he still had the upper hand.

Xelloss brushed back some of his purple hair and smiled. His future self couldn't kill him, because that would result in his own death as well. Now then... how to stop his future self from taking his prey from him...

"He came at just the right time..." Xelloss smiled again. "I was in need of a new game..."

Author's Notes

Alright, here's the next part... now.. what shall I write here? Oh yes... Xelloss was sent back in time by L-sama to balance things. Amelia is there to change the past, so Xel is supposed to preserve it. Yeah right. Not too good a choice in people, L-sama. You could have done better... oh well. We'll see how things work out... anyway, can anyone tell that I really need to make an outline of what's going to happen? I'm just making this up as I go along... is it very obvious? I think so... Anyway, send me e-mail! Please! I'd really like to hear what everyone thinks of this fic, and would it be too much to ask if you sent me any ideas you thought of for this fic, too? Onegai~! Okay, anyway, now that my traditional beg for e-mail had been said, I shall return to my telivision to re-watch some Escaflowne and wait for Shadowfire's fansubbs to come... Ja ne, minna-san!
